Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life – and travel – leaves marks on you.

Chicago is Second to None

Chicago is Second to None

When it comes to free things to do, Chicago boggles the mind. The Second City has everything you need: shopping, art, dancing, theater or even the comedy sketch troupe that has given a break from some of comedy’s finest.

Second City Comedy Troupe

ChicagoTinaFey

The world-renowned comedy troupe Second City started in the Second City. And since 1967, the comedy sketch troupe has given the world some of the greatest comedy talent: John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Mike Myers, Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey to name a few. Who knows which comedy genius will come from Second City next, but you can see them first during their free performances, following the last regular performance every night except Friday.

Chicago Summer Dance

ChicagoSummerDance

Learn how to dance for free. The Chicago Summer Dance, now in its 14th year, provides free one-hour dance lessons followed by free concerts and dancing in a different style each night: swing, country line dancing, Cajun, salsa and other dances from around the world. You can find most of the sessions at the Spirit of Music Garden from mid-June through mid-August; weather permitting. Events run every Thursday through Saturday from 6-9:30pm and every Sunday from 4-7pm. You can also find free dance performances at the Chicago Cultural Center throughout the year.

Theatre

ChicagoCadillacPalace

While you can’t see Broadway-style blockbusters at downtown venues such as Cadillac Palace for free, many of Chicago’s small-to-medium-sized theaters use volunteer ushers who show up a little early to hand out programs and then get to see plays for free. You could sign-up as a volunteer with the nonprofit group called The Saints for $65 annual membership, but many of these same theaters will allow you to volunteer on your own which will cost you nothing, just a little bit of your time. Oh, and there’s often a dress: black pants or skirts and white shirts. Make sure you check in advance.

Chicago Cultural Center

This historical landmark boasts two breathtaking stained-glass domes. You can see them on your own or on a free building tour. Mentioned before as a place for free dance performances, the Chicago Cultural Center also host several other free events like weekly classical music concerts, blues, jazz and more. Check out the daily schedule for free dance performances, film screenings, seminars and theater events.

Navy Pier

ChicagoNavyPier

One of Chicago’s most familiar landmarks has it all. Enjoy gorgeous lakefront views as you take a stroll on the pier’s boardwalk and feel the breeze as you take in a free weekly fireworks display every Wednesday and Saturday evening during the Summer. The Navy Pier puts on free outdoor concerts in the Land Shark Beer Garden and indoors, you can find free admission into the Smith Museum of Stained Glass, the first museum dedicated to stained glass windows, which features some of the best examples of colorful, artfully detailed glass. Oh, and you can shop until your heart’s content.

Millennium Park

ChicagoTheBean

You can’t miss Chicago’s Millennium Park, one of the state’s most popular tourist attractions, which features fantastic public art. A trip to the park has to include The Cloud Gate (or “The Bean”), where you can catch a mirrored glimpse at Chicago’s skyline and the splashing Crown Fountain during warm months. And while you’re at it, take in cutting edge stage performances at the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Prizker Pavilion for free all summer long.
