LinkedIn: A Platform for Healthcare Workers?
Earlier this week I saw a short-form piece of content where the creator stated that LinkedIn “isn’t built for healthcare workers.”
His point was that LinkedIn works for executives, but frontline staff have no interest in corporate chatter about innovation or AI. I’ll concede part of that. Healthcare workers generally tune out buzzwords and fluff. The irony, of course, is that he made this claim on LinkedIn. And in doing so, he missed the bigger truth.
LinkedIn works for healthcare workers when the content respects their time.
A nurse finishing a twelve-hour shift does not want to scroll through another jargon-filled post. However, that same nurse will engage with a one-minute guide to renewing a license. A traveler walking into a new assignment has no need for a leadership essay, but they will thank the recruiter who posts a parking map and a tip about the cafeteria.
Clinicians turn to LinkedIn when it delivers something they can use immediately. The professional groups give them a place to trade notes with peers who understand their reality, and I’ve seen firsthand how valuable that is. The platform itself isn’t the problem. The real shift has to come from how companies and recruiters choose to show up. Or, in the case of any product chasing the same audience, it comes down to how they engage on LinkedIn by posting content that is practical, relevant, and worth a clinician’s attention.
When content is built for the shift instead of the boardroom, it works. Pay ranges, housing hacks, licensing steps, and orientation guides get engagement because they are real and immediate. The problem is not that LinkedIn is the wrong place. The problem is that too many people are posting the wrong things and/or are too quick to dismiss it as the wrong place.
